A PPC is basically a prescription season ticket. You pay a flat fee upfront, and then every prescription you collect for the next 3 or 12 months is completely free. No limits. No catches.
The prices (frozen for 2025/26):
- 3-month PPC: £32.05
- 12-month PPC: £114.50
- HRT PPC: £19.80 (covers all HRT prescriptions for 12 months)
That's it. Once you've got one, you flash it at the pharmacy and pay £0.

When Does It Save You Money?
Simple maths:
- A single prescription costs £9.90
- A 3-month PPC costs £32.05 — saves money if you need 4+ items in 3 months
- A 12-month PPC costs £114.50 — saves money if you need 12+ items in a year
That's just one prescription per month. If you're on any kind of regular medication, you almost certainly qualify for savings. You can check if a PPC would save you money in about 30 seconds.
The Numbers Are Staggering
According to NHS Business Services Authority data published in January 2026, 3.4 million patients used a PPC in 2024/25. Patients with 12-month PPCs collectively saved an estimated £499 million on prescription charges.
That's half a billion quid that would have come out of patients' pockets.
Who Should Get One?
You'd benefit from a PPC if you:
- Take any regular medication (even just one monthly prescription = 12 items/year = saving already)
- Have a chronic condition like asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure
- Take multiple medications — each item on a prescription counts separately
- Are going through a period of treatment (e.g., antibiotics courses, physio medication)
Remember: each item is counted separately. If your GP writes you a prescription with 3 items on it, that's 3 x £9.90 = £29.70 without a PPC.
Who Doesn't Need One?
You might already get free prescriptions if you:
- Are under 16 (or under 19 and in full-time education)
- Are 60 or over
- Are pregnant or had a baby in the last 12 months
- Have certain medical conditions (diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, etc.)
- Receive certain benefits (Universal Credit with no earnings, Income Support, etc.)
- Live in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland (prescriptions are already free!)
If any of these apply, you don't need a PPC — you're already sorted.
How to Get One
- Go to nhsbsa.nhs.uk and search for "PPC"
- Choose 3-month or 12-month
- Pay online (you can spread the 12-month cost over 10 monthly direct debits of £11.45)
- You get a certificate number instantly — use it at any pharmacy
The direct debit option is clutch. £11.45/month for unlimited prescriptions? That's less than a Netflix subscription. You can buy your PPC directly from the NHS and set up monthly direct debit to spread the cost.
The HRT PPC
If you're on Hormone Replacement Therapy, there's a separate HRT PPC that costs just £19.80 for 12 months. It covers all your HRT prescriptions (you still pay for non-HRT items separately, or get a regular PPC too).
