Who we are
Hussl is operated as an independent project. For privacy enquiries, the data controller can be reached at privacy@hussl.life.
What we collect
We collect the minimum data needed to run Hussl:
- Newsletter subscribers: your email address, stored securely and used only to send you hack updates.
- Account holders: when you sign in via Google, Facebook, X, Apple, or email, we store your name, email, profile image, and chosen username to power your account and comments.
- Hack submissions and promotion orders: the content and contact email you provide when submitting or promoting a hack.
- Comments: the text you post, linked to your user account.
- Usage data: anonymous page views and basic analytics (via Vercel Analytics) to understand how the site is used. No personal identifiers are collected.
Legal basis for processing
We process your data on the following grounds:
- Consent: newsletter subscriptions and cookie acceptance.
- Contract: providing account features you signed up for and processing promotion orders.
- Legitimate interest: improving the site, preventing abuse, and basic analytics.
How we use it
- To provide and improve Hussl
- To send newsletter emails (only if you subscribe)
- To display your username and avatar on comments
- To process promotion orders
- To understand site usage through anonymous analytics
Third parties
We use the following third-party services to operate Hussl. Your data may be processed in the United States by these providers:
- Vercel — hosting and anonymous analytics
- Neon — database hosting
- Resend — transactional and newsletter emails
- Google, Facebook, X (Twitter), Apple — OAuth authentication (only if you choose to sign in with one of these)
We do not sell your data to anyone. These providers act as data processors and only handle your data as needed to provide their services.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. Specifically:
- Account data: retained until you delete your account.
- Newsletter subscriptions: retained until you unsubscribe.
- Comments: retained until you delete them or delete your account.
- Promotion orders: retained for record-keeping purposes.
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account settings.
Cookies
We use the following cookies:
- Session cookie — keeps you signed in. Essential. Expires when you close your browser or after 30 days.
- Theme preference — remembers your light/dark mode choice. Stored in localStorage, not sent to our servers.
- Region — remembers your detected region to show relevant hacks. Expires after 30 days.
- Cookie consent — records that you accepted cookies. Stored in localStorage.
We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising cookies.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, and the Australian Privacy Act, you have the right to:
- Access the data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to or restrict processing of your data
- Data portability — receive your data in a structured format
- Withdraw consent at any time (e.g. unsubscribe from the newsletter)
- Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (e.g. the UK ICO at ico.org.uk, or the OAIC in Australia)
Children
Hussl is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
