The Stopover Hack: Turn a Layover Into a Free Mini Holiday
Many airlines let you extend a layover to 1-7 days at no extra flight cost. See an extra city for free on the way to your destination.
Your Connecting Flight Is a Free Holiday Waiting to Happen
When you book a flight with a connection, most people pick the shortest layover. But several major airlines let you extend that connection to a multi-day stopover at no additional airfare cost.
Instead of a 3-hour connection in Istanbul, you could spend 3 days exploring the city and then continue to your final destination on the same ticket. The only extra cost is your hotel and meals in the stopover city.
Airlines That Offer Free Stopovers
Icelandair — The original stopover pioneers. Any flight connecting through Reykjavik can include a stopover of up to 7 days at no additional airfare. Given that Reykjavik is a destination in its own right (Blue Lagoon, Northern Lights, Golden Circle), this is incredibly popular. A London-to-New-York flight via Reykjavik becomes a two-destination trip.
Turkish Airlines — Offers the TourIstanbul program. If your connection in Istanbul is between 6 and 24 hours, Turkish Airlines provides a free guided city tour including transport, meals, and entry to major attractions. For longer stays, they sometimes offer free or heavily discounted hotel nights.
Emirates — Stopovers in Dubai can be added to most connecting itineraries. While not always free, Emirates frequently offers stopover packages with hotel rates from $40/night at 4-5 star properties — a fraction of the normal Dubai hotel prices.
TAP Air Portugal — Portugal Stopover program lets you add a stop in Lisbon or Porto for up to 5 days at no extra flight cost on transatlantic routes. They also partner with hotels for discounted stopover rates.
Singapore Airlines — Free stopovers in Singapore on many connecting itineraries. Singapore's Changi Airport is consistently ranked the world's best, and the city itself is compact enough to see highlights in 2-3 days.
Qatar Airways — Offers stopover packages in Doha from $14/night at 4-star hotels. Their transit hotel inside Hamad International Airport is also an option for shorter stops.

How to Book a Stopover
Method 1: Multi-city search. Book your trip as multi-city on Google Flights or the airline's website:
- Leg 1: London → Istanbul (arrive Tuesday)
- Leg 2: Istanbul → Bangkok (depart Friday)
Compare the multi-city price to the direct connecting fare. On many airlines, it's identical.
Method 2: Airline's stopover tool. Icelandair, TAP, and Singapore Airlines have dedicated stopover booking tools on their websites that add the stop during the regular booking flow.
Method 3: Call the airline. If the online system charges extra for the stopover, calling the reservations line often gets it added for free. Explain you want to extend your connection.
Making the Most of a Stopover
Pack a small daypack with essentials in your carry-on — charger, toiletries, change of clothes. If your checked luggage is tagged to the final destination, you won't have access during the stopover (though most airlines will check it to the stopover city if you ask at check-in).
Research visa requirements for the stopover country. Most European and Australasian passport holders can transit through the popular stopover cities visa-free. US citizens don't need a visa for Turkey (e-visa), Iceland, Portugal, Singapore, or Qatar for short stays.
Book accommodation near a metro line. You want to maximize sightseeing time, not sit in taxis. Istanbul's tram, Singapore's MRT, and Lisbon's metro are all excellent and cheap.
Don't over-plan. A 2-3 day stopover is perfect for hitting the highlights of a city. Pick 3-4 things you really want to see and leave room for wandering. You're not trying to see everything — you're getting a taste.
The Cost Breakdown
A typical London-to-Bangkok round trip via Istanbul costs around £450. Adding a 3-night Istanbul stopover doesn't change the airfare.
Your only extra costs:
- Hotel: £30-80/night (Istanbul is affordable)
- Food: £15-25/day
- Transport: £5-10/day
- Attractions: £10-30 total
For roughly £150-250, you've added an entire second destination to your trip. That's less than a budget weekend break to most European cities.
